Baby College South Africa is a platform that offers a series of developmental classes for babies from birth to 3 years. Classes include a carefully designed mixture of physical, multi-sensory and cognitive games, exercises and activities including music, dancing, singing and much more – all designed to cover every aspect of your child’s development.

Initially developed in the UK by a neurodevelopmental practitioner and an associate of the INPP Institute for Neuro-Physiological Psychology, much time was spent by her helping school-age children who were underachieving educationally due to developmental problems. She then went on to set up gym-style classes for babies where she used specific movement routines to encourage correct early development.

Michelle completed her studies in Foundation Phase Education at the North-West University. She relocated to the UK in 2009 where she gained experience in teaching at different nursery and primary schools and became interested in gaining a better understanding about the impact of early year development on the child’s ability to learn and progress later in life. She is a great believer that positive experiences in early childhood has the potential to pay off for a lifetime.

Upon her return to South Africa in 2011, she taught various foundation phase classes in primary schools around Johannesburg. Whilst teaching is her passion, it also sparked further interest in benefits of early cognitive, behavioural, social and emotional development. Early childhood experiences and interaction affect the development of brain architecture, providing the foundation for all future learning, behavior and health.

Michelle acquired the South African Baby College Franchise in 2018 as she believes there is a need to invest her energy and apply the knowledge and skills she acquired in her teaching career, to help parents invest in their children’s future.

Parent and baby development classes

Classes are run in three different age groups (Infants, Toddlers and Juniors) which progress as your baby grows and as they reach different milestone stages. All the 45-minute sessions are a mixture of short activities, which are structured, not only to provide a well-balanced and complete baby class, but also to help maintain everyone’s attention and make sure it is fun for baby, toddler, child and parent. Classes include sensory games, physical movements, music and cognitive activities like signing and language games.

Benefits of attending Baby College classes

Our original Baby College® parent and baby development classes help parents gain an insight into their baby’s development from birth onwards and learn a carefully designed range of physical, multi-sensory and cognitive games and exercises which can be enjoyed together in class and at home. The classes are fun and informative and allow time to socialise with other like-minded parents and their babies

One of the main benefits of attending a Baby College class is increased confidence for both parent and baby.  Parents gain more understanding of their baby, which leads to more confident and relaxed parenting; whilst babies are provided with a secure environment to encourage independence whilst strengthening the parent-baby bond.

The links to child development are both informative and refreshing and set it apart from other baby/toddler groups. The extensive range of activities and ideas can be taken home and used to enhance time spent together. The many different, informative and up-to-date development topics covered each term will offer answers to many of the questions you have about how and why your baby is developing. Weekly handouts help consolidate this knowledge.

Communication and Attachment

The 45-minute classes provide an intense period of one-to-one time with your baby encouraging communication by touch, eye contact, singing, gentle physical activity and the introduction of baby signing.

Having fun and making friends

There is time at the beginning and the end of the classes for you to get to know your fellow attendees and where lifelong friendships for you and your baby can be made.
