What is a Paediatric Pulmonologist?

A paediatric pulmonologist is a specialist paediatrician, who focuses on lung diseases of childhood. Common lung problems include, asthma, wheezing, gastro-oesophageal reflux, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, bronchiolitis, bronchitis, lung diseases of prematurity, lung diseases associated with neuromuscular problems and sleep problems such as apnoea.

Asthma is one of the commonest chronic conditions of childhood and often starts before the age of six. Many children can go undiagnosed for months and even years. Typical symptoms that parents should look out for, that may indicate an underlying lung problem includes, dry cough at night, cough with exercise, wheeze, repeated infections, trouble breathing, tiredness and poor sleep. If your child displays any of these symptoms, you should see your doctor or lung specialist.
